Project Description

The Steppe Birds Research Group (GIAE), made up of around 30 researchers from Spain and Portugal, has established itself as a benchmark in the study of birds associated with open habitats dominated by grasses and small scrublands, such as the Great Bustard, Little Bustard and Lesser Kestrel. These species, deeply linked to traditional low-intensity agricultural practices in the Iberian Peninsula, have suffered an alarming decline due to changes in European agricultural policies, ranking among the most endangered groups of birds in the world. GIAE works to fill the knowledge gaps on the ecology and conservation of these birds and to promote agricultural and land-use management strategies that ensure the viability of these unique ecosystems.

In this context, Biodiversity Node actively collaborates with the GIAE, supporting its initiatives and contributing to research and knowledge dissemination. The group has established lines of work encompassing the development of standard methodologies, research activities, workshops and dissemination, with the aim of becoming a scientific reference for the protection of these habitats and the biodiversity they harbour. Although currently focused on the Portuguese-Spanish sphere, the GIAE seeks to extend its impact to the European and international level.
