BBiodiversity Node was invited to take part in the Second Discussion on Wind Energy Projects and their Impacts on Birds. As part of the ‘Safe Sky’ series of talks included in the National Strategy for Species Conservation 2021-2023 (ENCA), promoted by the Ministry of Environment together with the Chilean Ministry of Energy.
We shared a talk with Daniela Montalva and Cesar Morgado from Statkraft who presented the compensation measures in their Chilean project ‘Vientos del desierto’. Our presentation ‘Planning and Action Protocols to minimise impacts on birdlife. Case of Spain in the development of Wind Farms’ gave rise to many interesting questions from the audience.
This document is the result of a collective effort that included a series of workshops held in 2024, where experts and key stakeholders analysed the effects of energy projects on birds. Its objective is clear: to mitigate these impacts and promote sustainable practices that protect biodiversity. It includes 21 practical recommendations for power transmission, wind farm and outdoor lighting projects, designed to guide project owners, utilities and environmental specialists. These suggestions, presented in the form of fact sheets, aim to encourage sustainable and voluntary actions, while respecting existing regulations.
We are confident that this guide will contribute to the care of birds and the sustainable development of the energy sector.
We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in this project. This document underlines the commitment to integrate biodiversity into sustainable energy development.
We love to collaborate in the exchange of experiences and ideas about conservation and the environment around the world. We hope to have the opportunity to talk again soon.
